Teachers and students have had mixed opinions and various thoughts about the new changes to Big Spring High School Growler’s hours since school has started. This change has started specifically in the 25-26 school year, and has been instated since the first day of school.
Many teachers and students have had mixed opinions on the topic for various reasons. Music teacher, Edward Wilson, said that the Growler was a “Time waster” and that it being closed more often “Saves time.” Many teachers follow this opinion due to not having to keep up with students during lunch, especially when it comes to accountability. Keeping up with students’ passes and their whereabouts was difficult in the Growler during lunch due to the lack of passes being used.
Custodians had to keep up with the trash and messes students made during the year. Following this, Christa Daugherty said, “Good to have a club space” and added that “The change wasn’t my idea”. Many students and teachers feel that the emptiness of the library is useful for a quieter space and more open time for various activities.
On the other hand, students from the higher grades feel that the change isn’t a good thing, or that they miss how the Growler and library used to be for lunch. “I feel like with the growler it was more peaceful and quiet, without it, it’s so crowded and overwhelming.” said Sam Weaver, a junior. Lots of students agree that the change has altered their routines and schedule, as well as that they dislike the changes due to how different the years are. The singular cafeteria space seems crowded and overwhelming to most that were used to the smaller and calmer Growler. While the vast majority of students like the way that things were, some students and staff concur that the old Growler is a thing of the past.
