Flex time is an incredible way to give students free time, and help students who deserve freedom get that freedom. It allows students to have a break in between classes to hang out with their friends or do homework. However, students that don’t utilize class time or just don’t do their work in general, have their time taken by being pulled by teachers to have them do their work. This gives students an incentive to do their work and get better grades.
This time also gives way for almost all of the clubs that the school provides. Clubs allow students to express themselves and help them meet new people. Flex gives students the opportunity to join these various clubs. It also stops students from using too much time out of school on these clubs. They give students the opportunity to involve themselves in the school and with other students. Clubs can help students share their ideas and help represent themselves . They let students help organize school events and events with other schools, such as the recent Minithon volleyball tournament with Boiling Springs.
During holidays and special events, some teachers have event flexes where students can participate in fun activities. Some special flexes that the school has used in the past are ping-pong, trivia, making friendship bracelets, and many more. This gives students even more to look forward to during the day than just being able to have a break. Flex gives students time to get closer to their teachers and form bonds with new people. When students know their teachers better, it can make them more comfortable asking them for help when it is needed.
Students can also use this time for academic purposes. Students who need help with work, can go see their teachers and get the help they need. Students who don’t need help can use the time to do homework, or unfinished work from their classes. Some students with good time management skills are able to do all of their homework. This gives an especially good opportunity for students without much free time after school because of jobs, sports, and many other out-of-school activities. Big Spring High School would greatly benefit from keeping this time during the day in the schedule, because of the many positives it brings for students
