Beloved teacher says goodbye
October 20, 2015
Jill Davis, an educator for 36 years, is retiring at the end of this school year. Her vast experience enables her to be fun, while still getting the main points of her lessons across. Davis’s personality is a force to be reckoned with. Usually fun-loving, Davis will not tolerate insubordination and disrespect in her classroom, yet she has never once written up a student. A few times, she might have gotten close, but the student always backs down.
Not only does Davis influence her student in the classroom, she also influences students everywhere at Big Spring. She maintains friendships with students she sees outside of school, and that tradition won’t stop after she retires. Davis said “I’ll see them when I shop at Saylor’s on Tuesdays when there’s 5% discount for old people!” Over the years, Davis has gone to many school functions such as school plays, football games, and band concerts, which shows her school spirit and support.
Davis has impacted many people and her presence will be missed at the school. Sarah Ickes said, “I think it is a great loss to the school, but a great opportunity for her to do what she loves.” Noah Drobel is against Davis’ retirement, saying “I don’t think it’s allowed.” This sentiment is not just voiced by the students, but also echoed by the teachers who have come in contact with her. SaraBeth Fulton says that observing Davis during her student teaching influenced how she teaches her students. Many teachers agree that the school will not be the same without her, some citing her love for life and others, like Robert McClure II, say that Davis “has an energy level that is off the scale… she’s one of a kind.”
Davis said that she hadn’t even thought of retiring before now, because “I love what I do and I do what I love.” She also said that “Everything’s good, good, good, and if you can go out with it like that, that’s when you do it.” Davis also states that most 71 year olds that she knows are already retired and that she doesn’t want to “be a relic.”
After retiring, Davis plans on exploring the world. The first place she plans to visit is Israel. Davis has never been able to visit there before now since the group she travels with only goes in the fall. After that, Davis said that she has no plan. A possibility for her may be geriatric fitness because “harassing old people might be fun!”
Out of everything that Davis has known and done, she said that she will miss the students and her colleagues the most. According to her, “It’s been a hoot! I have really enjoyed it.” Based on the responses received the feeling is mutual. Perhaps Dean Smith sums it up the best, “We love you, Jill.”

Mrs. Davis once asked me when she should retire. She had my brother and I. There are 17 years between us. Mrs. Davis has been there through the years and made me feel as though I was a part of her family. She will forever remain a part of mine. My nephew is in the high school now and I wish he would’ve been granted the privilege of having Mrs. Davis as a teacher because it is surely a privilege. I will cherish the memories of seeing her roam the halls and hearing her fun boystrious voice before actually seeing her. Thank you Mrs. Davis for all the great and wonderful things you have shared with me. As one of your former students I can now say I have seen a teacher who is truely one of the greatest influences in the lives of future parents of America!

Jill was an amazing teacher. Always a great time in her class, especially when she got the stability balls in her classroom. She will be deeply missed by everyone at the high school, but I’m glad to see she will be continuing to do the things she loves. I hope some day when I’m 71, I have as much energy as she does, and that I continue to do the things I love. Thank you Ms. Davis for being an amazing teacher!

Absolutely amazing is how I would describe Jill Davis! She was a fantastic English teacher at Carlisle and continued to Big Spring! I have so many fond memories (mine started in the 1968-69 school year at Carlisle). You have had such a positive influence on so many! Best wishes for more fun and excitement in the coming years! Should your travels include NC (near Charlotte) please know that you are a welcomed guest!

I’ll keep this short and sweet. Ms. Davis will always be one of the greatest teachers. She knew how to push her students to prepare them for the real world.

Jill was my favorite teacher ever. It has been 21 years since I graduated, but when ever I pull out the old yearbook and I look through the pages I remember another story about Jill. And I’m still looking for my missing piece.?

One of my favorite teachers! Will never forget the picture she passed around of her colon on red velvet, the whistling in the hallways and the two windows which were never to be closed (and more). Happy retirement!!!

I went to Carlisle High School in 1972 . We had an all boy class because we had Vocational shop classes. Jill was our English teacher and we could ask her anything and she was always honest with her answers. All of us in class (all boys) Had a crush on her and could’nt wait to go to her class. She made a difference in all our lives and will be one of the best teachers I will ever know. God speed Jill and good LUCK ! Your friend Tom Doyle Class of 1972 Carlisle High.

I never thought I would see the day that Ms. Davis retired, I thought she would be there forever, I loved you as a teacher and over all great person. You always made learning much easier and fun. I always hoped that my children would have you for a teacher but unfortunately my oldest did not have you and my youngest will not. Fortunately she has your daughter as an English teacher this year and loves having her she is just as sweet as you and I know she has been taught by the best. Good luck with your retirement I wish you all the best. have fun on your travels. You have left an ever lasting impression on me and others and will never be forgotten. You have always been my favorite teacher by far, I can’t say I didn’t have other special teachers, but you were the best.
Have an awesome retirement!

Congrats to you Ms. Davis on a job well done. You have given many years to the school and the children that you have taught. You have left an impression on each and every one of them. You leave lasting memories and share lifetime experiences with the youth that you teach. You offer respect to each and every student and in return the students have respected you. It is always a joy to see you in the neighborhood and I look forward to following your continued journeys and adventures. Enjoy your retirement as it is well deserved! Best of luck and best wishes to you.

Well, I never thought I’d see this headline written in conjunction with Ms. Davis’ name, ever, ever! I’m honored to be not only an alum of Big Spring High School, but of Jill Davis’ Honors English classes as well. Watching this video brought back so many hilarious and unforgettable memories created during my time with Ms. Davis (says Bosnian Chick who is “strong like bull.”) The English Department at Big Spring High School is truly, truly special, and saying goodbye to the backbone of it all will be a huge adjustment! However, I hope Ms. Davis embraces the “time-sucking machine of Facebook” and the internet itself, and keeps us up to date on her adventures around the world, and pranks on the less lively elderly folks around her
Best wishes Ms.Davis!

Ms. Davis was one of my first teachers when I started going to Big Spring in my junior year. She is still one of my favorites. Because of her I advertise exercise balls for every classroom.
In all seriousness, she was extremely welcoming and really helped me feel comfortable in my writing and in front of a classroom. If anyone is able to, please tell her Faith Chapman says hello and wishes her happy traveling!

Jill! You would be amazing at Geriatric Fitness! If you do that I am in 1000%. Does 58 count as geriatric? You are so inspiring and motivational! Love to you and congrats on retirement! Keep us posted on what you’re doing. You know they have this great thing called Facebook! Have you heard of it? LOL Stay in Faith and have a wonderful retirement. Need to see pics of Israel when you go… =D
